Description
JACKSON SQUARE, located in the French Quarter, in New Orleans, Louisiana was renamed in honor of Andrew Jackson, following the victorious New Orleans Battle, which he led. The Square, under early colonial French control was known as Place d'Armes.During the second half of the 18th century the area was under the control of the Spanish and the name of the Square was changed to Plaza de Armas.
On the north side of the square stands three buildings. The St. Louis Cathedral, which is flanked by Cabildo on the left, and the matching Presbytère on the right. The Cabildo served as the courthouse, this is where the final papers of the the Louisiana Purchase was signed. the Presbytère served as housing for Roman Catholic priests and other church officials. In the 19th century it was used as a courthouse and is currently a museum.
During the 18th and 19th centuries the square was used for the public execution of criminals and rebellious slaves. Today the square is known as the gathering place for local artists, street musicians, fortune tellers, street vendors and the many tourists who flock to the area to learn the interesting history of this culturally rich area.
