Description
Lake Como, Italy is a lake shaped like an inverted Y. It is the third largest lake in Italy having an area of 56 sq. miles. The lake is 1300 feet deep making it the fifth deepest lake in Europe. The bottom of the lake sits 660 feet below sea level. Lake Como area has been the retreat to many Roman aristocrats and today many famous people own houses throughout the area (no we did not see George Clooney). The lake area is well known for the many villas and gardens that have been built there over the years. It area has a very efficient ferry service linking all the towns.
During our trip, we stayed in Bellagio for three nights. Don't expect a lot of nightlife, it is quiet and relaxing. Great place to have your morning cappuccino and pastry while enjoying the lovely scenes on Lake Como. From Bellagio we took a day trip to Varenna, which is also very quiet and quaint village, interesting architecture and history.
