Description
SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER, Calidris pusilla its scientific name, is a common small shorebird seen at the New Jersey shore. The adults have straight, short beaks and long black legs. Both male and female have a hand in incubation of their eggs. The female, however, leaves the young with the male after a few days. The birds feed mostly on aquatic insects and crustaceans. They find their food by sight and feel with their beak. They are long distance migrating birds ending up in Southern United States and coastal South America.
