Description
EL CARACOL, or the snail, is an observatory in the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, Mexico. The building is one of the main buildings and was dedicated for the study of astronomy by the Mayans. It consists of a tower set on two rectangular stone platforms. The astronomers made their observations with the naked eye, recording the movements in the sky, they observed the movements from this tower. The building gets its name, El CARACOL from the staircase within the building which resembles a snail shell.
