Description
Butterfly-Male Black Swallowtail. Black Swallowtails are found throughout southern Canada, eastern and mid-western United States west to the Rocky Mountains, and southwest into Arizona and northern Mexico. When there wings are closed the male and female are identical, with the female being slightly larger than the male. The Swallowtail pictured here is a male, exhibiting the two rows of bright yellow spots which are paler on the female. You will find these lovely butterflies fluttering around in open areas. Their host plants consist of caraway, celery, fennel, parsley, and dill. Throughout the summer, I usually find a few eggs or larva in my herb garden. I carefully inspect the plants before picking so as not to disturb the hatching and growth process.
