Description
California-Golden Gate Bridge 2. This iconic bridge is a suspension bridge which spans across the Golden Gate, which is the one-mile-wide strait connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Prior to the construction of the bridge, travel from San Francisco to Marin County was by ferry which was established in 1820. When it opened in 1937, it was the longest and the tallest suspension bridge in the world, with a main span of 4,200 feet and a total height 746 feet. The bridge no longer holds the record. Why is the Golden Gate Bridge red? The steel that arrived in San Francisco to build the Golden Gate Bridge was coated in a burnt red/orange shade of primer to protect it from corrosive elements. It was decided to paint the bridge this color was because it was very visible in the fog and it complemented the topography of the and contrasted blues of the bay and the sky.
