Venice-A Corner of St Marks Basilica. St Marks Basilica is located on the eastern end of Saint Mark's Square, the former political and religious centre of the Republic of Venice. It is attached to the Doge's Palace, where the Doge's of Venice lived who was the supreme authority during the republic of Venice. It was originally built to house the relics of St. Mark who was the patron of the republic. The works of the present basilica began in 1063 in Byzantine style to represent the power Venetian Republic. The basilica today has a Greek cross base with five domes. It became the cathedral of the city in 1807. and has more than 4,000 sq ft of mosaics from the 13th century. When the Adriatic Sea level rises, Venice floods. St. Marks Sq is the lowest part of the city and the first to flood.
