Description
MILAN-DUOMO DI MILANO Such a magnificent Cathedral and it only took 6 centuries to complete! There are 34,000 stautes inside and outside of the cathedral, 135 spires, 55 stained glass windows, and 150 gargoyles. The area of the cathedral is around 125,937 feet. The cathedral houses the largest organ in Italy, having 15,800 pipes and 4 organ cases and some of these pipes are over 9meters high. Then you have the Gold Madonnina which stands at 108.5 meters. She stands guard over Milan. Over the years she had tarnished and deteriorated from the elements. In the 1900’s she was re-made of stainless steel and copper plates. The Madonnina holds a lightning rod hidden in her Halberd (weapon similar to an ax) to protect her when thunder strikes. The intricate carvings on the facade of this cathedral and also inside is breathtaking. We almost missed the opportunity to take the tour of the cathedral and also make the trek to the roof. If you ever get to Milan, do not hesitate to buy a ticket for the tour. The inside of the Catherdral is awesome, but when you climb to the roof of the cathedral, the view and a close up of the sculptures is absolutely breathtaking.
